Library News 19th November 2013

LIBRARY in Term 4 with Mrs Palmer (Teacher Librarian.) Dear Parents/Guardians, The Library is now closed for borrowing for the year. Please return all books to the library before the end of Week 8, ready for Stock-take. ***REMINDER: Scholastic Book Club orders are due in tomorrow. This is the last Book Club order for the year. This term, during Primary Library Lessons we have had great fun being introduced to new resources and technology to support our HSIE and Science units. Kindergarten have learned about Hot and Cold with a focus on the Weather using a variety of literature. I introduced them to a great new iPad App entitled Seasons. Stage One (Years 1 & 2) have looked at various celebrations and festivals. I introduced them to a new set of 4 books to our library entitled Celebrations and Festivals. Stage Two (Years 3 & 4) have investigated consumers, producers, marketing techniques and goods and services using a variety of Websites, an eBook and a WebQuest “Who will buy?” Stage Three (Years 5 & 6) have learned some Researching techniques using a WebQuest to support their HSIE unit on Bali to retrieve information. They have been guided to appropriate websites that have been carefully selected and evaluated for their use. Our lessons during the week of November 11th this term, for all Year groups, focussed on Remembrance Day. I would like to thank all families who have supported Scholastic Book Club and the Central Book Fair this year. The monies raised were used to purchase new books for our Library. I would also like to deeply thank all parents and family members who have assisted me in covering the new books for the library over the last few weeks. We had a very kind donation from one parent of covering materials for our new books and we are very grateful. The titles of the new resources to our library for 2013 will be posted here in the coming weeks and early next year. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Joyful 2014!

New Search Engine - DuckDuckGo!

There is a new Search Engine that is very user-friendly. It is called DuckDuckGo. At first, DuckDuckGo.com looks like Google. But there are many subtleties that make this spartan search engine different. DuckDuckGo has some slick features, like 'zero-click' information (all your answers are found on the first results page). DuckDuckgo offers disambiguation prompts (helps to clarify what question you are really asking). And the ad spam is much less than Google. Give DuckDuckGo.com a try... you might really like this clean and simple search engine.
